Why We Did This
The recent UN Climate Summit in New York highlighted many Government initiatives to address climate change either through reducing impact, plans to regulate or price carbon, and support for new technologies including the UK’s efforts to accelerate fracking . Yet one of the best ways Governments can take action is by putting their money where their mouth is -- spending on sustainable, resilient companies that minimize their impact on climate change.
UK Government procurement has a powerful impact on the economy with overall spend contributing to over 40% of GDP (HM Treasury Budget) . Spend on suppliers represents a large component of overall spend thereby providing a key opportunity to collaborate with business to fight climate change. However we believe that to manage something it must be measured properly, and right now the carbon impact of the Government supply chain is not being measured in a supplier-specific basis that would support decision-making. The supply chain portals accessible from this site provide a ready tool and transparent insight to assess supply chain performance and take action to reduce impact, cost and risk.
About
AMEE provides a unique profile and carbon emissions score for every UK business as open data on the web. We combine business and environmental information and use big data analytics to model and predict the carbon footprint of every company. Our scores then compare companies based on efficiency relative to with industry peers. We integrate additional risk information, such as financial risk from our partner Creditsafe , to provide a more complete company profile. To learn more about AMEE’s emissions model and scoring click here .
For this project AMEE partnered with Spend Network , which provides open government spend data, and linked our data together to identify all companies in the supply chain and what spend they receive from Government. We then integrated this data into the AMEE platform to deliver the central Government portals above.
