Environmental Intelligence, Everywhere. We believe that information about our environmental impact can and should be available everywhere, to help us better measure and manage resources. Whether it’s on software applications, consumer product labels, buildings, vehicles, or other objects, our vision is for AMEE to provide the information necessary to make intelligent decisions on how we use resources.
Our story
In 2006 Andrew and Gavin, who attended secondary school together, were hanging out on Gavin’s boat discussing one of our generation’s major challenges: climate change. Their discussion focused on how sustainability was broken because it was not scalable, was prone to risk, and bore high costs of adoption. They realized that two other converging trends—cloud computing and big data—could help “fix” sustainability by bringing together the insights necessary to make effective, accurate decisions feasible at the scale required to counter climate change. They also realized that their respective backgrounds made them well-positioned to take on the challenge: Gavin as a serial internet entrepreneur and Andrew as a NASA-trained data scientist. In early 2007, they founded AMEE.
AMEE’s first major achievement came when the UK’s Department of Climate Change selected the start-up to lead its ActOnCO2 campaign. In addition to becoming the largest carbon footprinting effort ever, with over two million footprints assessed, this initiative was a pioneering example of using web-service API technology to enable access to government data.
Soon AMEE began to grow exponentially, gaining top global brands as customers including CNN, Google, Morgan Stanley, and Radiohead. To fuel this growth, AMEE secured funding from angel investors and leading venture capital firms O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, Union Square Ventures, and Amadeus Capital Partners. AMEE continues to grow, expanding our available data, developing our technology, and deepening the expertise on our team. It’s been an exciting few years, and we anticipate many more!

Our team consists of roughly one-third data science experts, one-third software engineers, and one-third business professionals. Over half of our staff hold PhDs in relevant fields.
